Fall Creek teachers receive 5 IPEI Grants!

We are pleased to announce that Fall Creek received five grants from Ithaca Public Education Initiative (IPEI) during its first round of applications for this academic calendar!

The first was awarded to Lydia Dolch for her proposal, “Accessing Art.” Students across grade levels study works from the permanent collection at the Herbert F. Johnson Museum with Carol Hockett and bring them to life for people in the community with special needs.

The second grant will be used by Jonathan Keefner to create the Modern Music Classroom which will introduce JamHub’s as a collaborative and progressive way of rehearsing and recording an electronic based ensemble.

The third is for, “From Seed to Table,” proposed by Robert Novick. Through the direction and instruction of Novick and experts from Cornell and TC3, students will learn about plant biology, the impact of environmental factors on food/ crop growth, and set up a functioning container vegetable garden in Fall Creek’s school greenhouse.

The fourth was awarded to Varya Siegel and Sarah Smith. They will use a multi-sensory approach to introduce three new social skills each month and support children in using these pro-social skills throughout the day. For each social skill targeted they will also send home a short, simple hand-out to families so they can follow through at home.

Finally, Catherine Hart was provided funding for her proposal, “Can You Build It? Using STEM Based Building Manipulative/Materials to Create Structures through Team Challenges.”

IPEI would love to hear about the student experience. If you would like to do a short write up about one of these grants that could be used for media purposes please contact

Do you have an hour to spare after school on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays?

With warm regards and utmost thanks to Barb Rogers and Patti Harrington for their dedication to our students in the enrichment programs, Fall Creek PTA is looking for a new Hall Monitor.

This PAID position requires someone to:
+ Be trustworthy and reliable
+ Be ready to check children into their assigned classes by 2pm
+ To remain in the main foyer throughout enrichment sessions, and
+ Be sure all children are checked out and “handed off” to their after-enrichment plans (after school, pickup, walk home, etc.)

You will be done by 3:20ish—about 90 minutes all told. Enrichment runs approximately 18 weeks of the school year, (3) 6-week sessions.

"The Ghost & Mr. Chicken" - Cinemapolis Family Classics Picture Show

David Moreland, who presented the face-painting and makeup demonstration to the Fall Creek children last week, serves alongside kindergarten teacher Allison Andersen on Cinemapolis’ Family Classics Picture Show committee. They share this info about an upcoming movie:
Want to kick off the Halloween season with some funny, spooky family entertainment? Bring your family and all your friends to Cinemapolis at 2pm on Sun Oct 23rd for the 1966 comedy “The Ghost & Mr. Chicken.” Don Knotts plays a would-be reporter who seizes on a chance for a big scoop by spending the night in a creepy old house — that might be haunted! Tickets are just $2 for kids, $3 for adults, and $10 for a family pass. “The Ghost & Mr. Chicken” includes a couple of spooky scenes that might be too intense for younger elementary-aged children.
“The Ghost & Mr. Chicken” is part of the Family Classics Picture Show series at Cinemapolis, Ithaca’s favorite non-profit movie theater!
