Room Parents
The room parent job description: Two room parents in each class will help let families know about PTA events and assist the teacher in getting families involved in the class.
Time required: Room parents will have more work in the early fall as they touch base with all the families and the teacher. After that, they would probably spend about 30 minutes, twice a month, contacting families about school, PTA and classroom activities.
Duties include: Contact each family. Room parents will contact families before events such as curriculum night, PTA meetings and the Halloween party, to invite them and ask each family to let them know if they need a ride. This contact sheet will be compiled at the beginning of the year. Each room parent will ask the teacher for the list of names, e-mail addresses and phone numbers of each child’s parent(s). The room parents will contact each family and ask how they would like to be contacted throughout the year.
PTA directory. Room parents will receive a draft of their class directory page as soon as it is available. These draft pages will be sent home with each child, but the room parents will follow up if parents have not yet given contact information and work with the directory data base people.
Work with the teacher. Most room parent duties will be developed in conjunction with the teacher. These could include getting parents to sign up for parties (holiday, author parties, etc.), helping to facilitate volunteers, helping to pass on information — whatever works for each class.
Baking and other volunteer needs. Room parents will contact other parents within the class to ask for donations of food for bake sales and recruit volunteers to work on PTA events.
Welcome new families. The Room Parent welcomes new families as they move to our community throughout the year.
